“This will be a difficult game, as they all are in Serie A. Lazio are a great side, while we have interesting young players alongside more mature talents like Luca Rigoni, Alberto Gilardino and Stefano Sorrentino.

“I am glad people at Palermo remember me for playing entertaining football. Franco Vazquez is an attacking player and if he plays behind the strikers, he mustn’t limit his range. We want to open up as many spaces as possible.

“Gilardino is good at keeping the ball up and encouraging his teammates to attack. I want to see a compact side that knows how to defend and attack as a unit.”

Ballardini also confirmed this will involve a change of tactics from predecessor Beppe Iachini.

“In our squad there are several centre-backs who played more with a three-man defence than four. Actually I’d call it five, because the wing-backs in my view are full-backs who both attack and defend.”

Palermo squad for Lazio: Alastra, Colombi, Sorrentino; Andelkovic, Daprelà, El Kaoutari, Goldaniga, Gonzalez, Lazaar, Rispoli, Struna; Brugman, Chochev, Hiljemark, Jajalo, Maresca, Rigoni, Quaison; Gilardino, Trajkovski, Vazquez
