Vincenzo Montella said Sampdoria “are lacking confidence” after a 1-0 defeat to Udinese on his debut.

The Coach took over this week from sacked Walter Zenga, but his first game in charge was disappointing.

“The team tried to do some good things and we had more possession with a few chances too,” Montella told Sky Sport Italia.

“There’s a lot of work to be done because the players are lacking confidence and they can do much more than they did today. We must have faith in them and I do.

“We gave the ball away a lot today, but still had more possession than Udinese. We need to improve on this and work because often the mistake is not the one passing the ball, but the movement of the player receiving it.

“The poor away record is strange and I don’t understand it. Paradoxically, the characteristics of this squad should make them more dangerous away from home.”

Antonio Cassano came off the bench in the second half, but will Montella’s ex-Roma teammate become a key figure?

“Antonio has the potential, everyone knows that. From what I’ve seen so far he has the right attitude. He is working on his fitness levels, that takes time and it’s up to Antonio now whether he wants to become a genuine protagonist again.”
