Roberto Mancini has come under fire for his cautious approach and perceived lack of creativity, but the Nerazzurri are currently two points clear at the top of the Serie A table.

“If Inter win the Scudetto, nobody will remember the unimpressive first 10 games,” Prandelli told the Corriere dello Sport.

“In a ‘resultist’ culture like ours, whoever wins is always right. It’s difficult to explain what beautiful football is anyway.

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s seeking the victory through a fluid manoeuvre, attempting to play enjoyable football made of synchronised movements at pace, with and without the ball.

“You can win playing well or less well, but when a team achieves a great objective like the Scudetto, Cup or promotion, it means they’ve played good football in some sense.

“With my Fiorentina and the Italy side I always sought beautiful football. Time will give a fair evaluation of the work I did for the Nazionale.”

Of the current crop, Prandelli is most impressed with Napoli and Fiorentina.

“Maurizio Sarri and Paulo Sousa arrived to find fertile groundwork laid by Rafa Benitez and Vincenzo Montella, but did well to improve and develop it.

“A Coach must do well with the material at his disposal. Max Allegri is trying to find the right formula by often changing system at Juventus and that could be an advantage. It’s not easy to follow up last season’s Double, but Juve can continue a winning era.”

Among the harshest critics of Inter is Arrigo Sacchi, whose Grande Milan won everything in the late 1980s.

“Sacchi was an innovator and pointed the way towards football able to combine spectacle with results. Seeing his Milan play was just pure joy.

“Now it’s Pep Guardiola who offers the best football. His Barcelona marked an era and Bayern Munich are now doing just as well. It’ll take a while before Coaches figure out how to neutralise his tiki-taka style.”
