The Players’ Association has warned it will clamp down on Palermo after President Maurizio Zamparini claimed his team performed badly on purpose.

“I watched the game and if you saw it too you know that there are four or five players who played against their own Coach,” Zamparini said after a 3-2 Coppa Italia defeat to Alessandria.

“They are shameful, and I’m ashamed of their attitude.”

He then pledged to freeze these unnamed players out of the squad for the rest of the season.

“We were stunned to read the comments of Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini, which were seriously damaging to the professionalism of certain players and can have consequences that go beyond sport for those involved,” read a statement from the AIC (Italian Players’ Association).

“We also read the manifest intent of the club to take action that violates even the most basic rules on the work of a sportsman and the dignity of individuals.

“It is our intention to contrast behaviour that can go beyond mere sporting criticism and will constantly monitor the situation, hoping certain behaviour will cease with immediate effect.”
