Napoli are the only side with a perfect European tally this season after sweeping Legia Warsaw aside 5-2, setting a new record.

Not only have they won all six games, they beat the all-time record set by Salzburg with 22 goals scored and only three conceded, including five in each of their three home fixtures.

The Partenopei wanted a boost just days after their 18-match unbeaten run was ended in Bologna. Gonzalo Higuain and Marek Hamsik were rested, plus Manolo Gabbiadini injured, while Legia missed Dominik Furman, Rafal Makowski and Michal Maslowski.

Dries Mertens had his first start since an ankle injury and immediately forced a tough save out of the goalkeeper with his free kick curling under the bar.

David Lopez thought he had scored after 18 minutes, but his snapshot was deflected to hit the crossbar and bounce back off the ground.

Kalidou Koulibaly nodded over from a corner, but the deadlock was broken in style by Chelsea loan player Nathaniel Chalobah. In only his second start for the club, the midfielder who turns 21 in a couple of days surged through the centre, nutmegged Michal Pazdan and smashed his finish in off the underside of the bar.

Moments later, Insigne’s angled drive skimmed the far post and Mertens had his solo effort charged down.

Insigne did double the tally when he pounced on a poor back-pass to slip his finish past the on-rushing goalkeeper.

Mertens and Insigne exchanged a series of passes with some wonderful one-touch football, but the Italian eventually volleyed over.

Vlad Chiriches had the ball in the net with a header from a corner, but it was disallowed for reasons unknown, perhaps because Omar El Kaddouri was standing in the way of the goalkeeper.

Jose Callejon came off the bench and scored almost immediately, sneaking up behind defenders to tap in a Mertens ball flashed across the six-yard box.

Napoli conceded only their second goal in the Europa League campaign, as Prijovic rolled across for Vranjes to sweep home first time from 10 yards, leaving Gabriel no chance.

Mertens restored order moments later, completing a quick give-and-go with Callejon on the edge of the box and his shot bounced in off the inside of the near post.

That was Napoli’s 21st goal in the Europa League group stage, equalling the record set by Salzburg.

It was incredibly not 5-1 on 71 minutes, as Mertens went on an extraordinary dribble through four players at the by-line and his shot was denied by an acrobatic goal-line clearance, then Callejon fired the rebound on to the upright.

Mertens tried again with a spectacular scissor-kick volley over the bar and completed his brace in stoppages with a sensational strike from outside the area that dipped viciously into the top corner.

Moments later, Prijovic added a second for Legia Warsaw, springing the offside trap for a free header.
