Sinisa Mihajlovic says Milan “showed that we have character” after beating Sampdoria in the Coppa Italia.
The Rossoneri emerged from Luigi Ferraris with a 2-0 win, thanks to goals from M’Baye Niang and Carlos Bacca, a potentially crucial result for the under-fire Coach.
“We had to win, and we won,” Mihajlovic told Rai.
“The route to the final is not prohibitive [Carpi followed by Spezia or Alessandria] and has a different sense to the League.
“We showed that we have character. Now we’ll prepare for the game with Frosinone so we can have a peaceful Christmas.”
Following draws with relegation-battlers Carpi and Verona, how bad is the situation for Milan?
“The results with Carpi and Verona weren’t positive because our name is Milan. They are games to be won, and I think we deserved to win.
“Tonight we should have put it to bed, like we should have before, but we deserved to win.
“If we’d won against Verona we’d have taken 18 points from 9 games, or two points per game, which is an average that takes you into the Champions League.
“We’ve not been taking advantage of our chances, but we’ve never lost faith and we’re convinced we’ll reach our goal.”
M’Baye Niang has four goals and an assist in his last five games for the club, is he a favourite of the Coach?
“M’Baye is a very young player,” Mihajlovic pointed out, following a fine performance from the 20-year-old.
“His problem is that he needs to find consistency, both in the game and throughout the week. When he grows mentally he’ll be very strong, because he has it all physically and technically.
“It all depends on his head and his concentration, he can’t be content. I’d prefer him to always take the ball on.
“When he runs with it, it’s very difficult to mark him because he’s got a left foot and a right foot. He’s important.”
