Serie B side Cagliari presented the plans for their new stadium, set to be opened in 2019.

The inability to get planning permission for a new arena was one of the primary reasons Massimo Cellino sold the club after 20 years and bought Leeds United instead.

The new project was formally presented today with plans to have a stadium holding 21,000 seats and should be completed in 2019.

The investment from the club is around €55m and the name of the stadium is still unknown.

“We hope to get a sponsor in for the name,” said director Stefano Signorelli.

The current stadium, the Sant’Elia, will be knocked down in May 2017.

It’ll be replaced by a modern structure that includes shops, bars and a 10,000 square metre commercial area with a sporting theme.

There will also be a gym, a physiotherapy centre, martial arts studio, football pitches and courts for basketball, tennis and volleyball.

This is the plan, but the local council has to give the all-clear on whether the structure would be in the public interest before going ahead.
