Maurizio Sarri reveals why Gonzalo Higuain ran over to hug him after Napoli’s 3-1 victory over Atalanta.

The Partenopei missed a penalty and had Jorginho sent off, but secured their first Serie A win in Bergamo since January 2010.

“Gonzalo came to hug me because he scored a goal on a routine we tested out yesterday morning,” explained the Coach on Mediaset Premium.

“This was a difficult match in a really tough arena and it was difficult for us to play our football, but we emerged with an important victory.

“We’ve won 17 of our last 20 games, so I don’t see why we ought to be particularly worried. At this moment I see a team in good shape. If we had a moment of difficulty it was 15-20 days, understandable considering we played 24 matches.

“Today we did well on set plays, scoring a goal and earning a penalty. We had done something more in the Europa League on corners and I told the team my sensations on dead ball situations were changing. We changed everything, it’s a mentality issue too.

Napoli never had to study these issues before, so they weren’t accustomed to them.”

Serie A goes into a Christmas break and won’t resume until January 6, but Sarri isn’t happy about it.

“I am against this, as no athlete wants to stay off the field for a full seven days. We should be playing continually and it’d be only right to give the fans some entertainment when they have time off.”
