There are three main options to take over mid-season, one of them a very familiar face in Serie A and the Stadio Olimpico.

Spalletti remains the favourite for a return to his former club after parting company with Zenit, but he wants a long contract and this is why Roma are hesitant.

Other alternatives would have an international dimension, but be unknown quantities in Italian football: Bielsa and Sampaoli.

Bielsa is a 60-year-old Argentine known as ‘El Loco’ and sensationally quit Olympique Marseille after the opening game of the season.

In the past he was in charge of both Argentina and Chile national sides.

Sampaoli is also from Argentina and the current Coach of Chile, but many expect him to walk away.
