The first Lega Pro side to reach this phase since Bari in 1984 were beaten only by a Mario Balotelli penalty.

“We could not complete on a technical level, but we could’ve been more precise in our finishing,” Gregucci told Rai Sport.

“We kept the game open. If we reached the semi-finals, it was not a fluke, and I compliment my players. Qualification is still possible, you never can tell in football. It's not over yet.”

Alessandria played the home fixture at Torino’s Stadio Olimpico and the second leg will be at San Siro on March 1.

“The pride of this city, which travelled en masse to this stadium, astounded me too. There were so many fans and we tried to represent them as best we could.

“There is still hope and we keep the tie in the balance. The objective tonight was to represent Lega Pro football and everyone who cheered us on.”
