Stefano Pioli stood up for Felipe Anderson, but felt Lazio deserved more than a stalemate against Genoa.

The Aquile were held to a 0-0 draw at Marassi and failed to find the net for the third round running.

“I don’t think we were lacking in the performance, but rather in that final move to finish off the chances,” he told Mediaset Premium.

“I don’t think we were lacking in the performance, but rather in that final move to finish off the chances,” he told Mediaset Premium.

“The state of the pitch is a problem for everyone who comes here. Despite that, we had our opportunities and considering what we produced I think we should’ve taken home the victory.

“I decided to use Stefano Mauri after seeing him in training. It all went as planned, we were just missing the goal.

“This evening the defence did much better and caused problems for Genoa. The defenders need to have their confidence boosted so they realise that they’re up to this situation.”

Felipe Anderson was again uninspired, but Pioli defended the Brazilian.

“He is that type of player with a lot of pace and quality. When the moves work, he’s treated like a phenomenon, when they don’t he’s labelled a flop. He worked very hard for the team tonight. People always expect the moment of magic from him, although it’s true he could be a little more precise.”
