Luciano Spalletti warned Roma “can’t have these lapses” after almost throwing away their lead against Sampdoria.

The Giallorossi were 2-0 up, but scraped a 2-1 win thanks to the crossbar denying Mattia Cassani in stoppages and a great Wojciech Szczesny save on Antonio Cassano.

“Roma have to explain what we want to do, because lately when we are convinced that we’re taking the right path, we do a sudden U-turn,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

“Today we had settled into a game that was fairly comfortable to control, we just had to keep the ball. Then there was a moment of confusion and all the initial good work almost went up in smoke.

“Fortunately we won, because we could so easily have been caught at the end. To be honest, the team did deserve victory because we wasted a lot of chances to add more goals, but we can’t have these lapses during a single game. That’s a sign we have a lot more work to do psychologically.

“Sampdoria improved as the game wore on, because they have some talented players on the ball, but we should’ve been tighter and protected the defence with the midfield.”

Roma notched up a third consecutive victory and are now only one point behind Inter, two adrift of third-placed Fiorentina.

“We gladly take these three points home. Seeing that we’re up there so close can give a bit more spark.”

Edin Dzeko came off the bench and was greeted by warm applause and chants from the home fans.

“As long as people keep asking me questions about him, he will always be under pressure. He is accustomed to receiving the ball and on a couple of occasions we did that, but in others we kicked it at him like in rugby.

“He was also unlucky, as Mohamed Salah should’ve passed it to him on one occasion. He is not relaxed, but he has quality and we must make the most of it.”
