The first question in his Press conference was about rumours of a split with the Della Valle brothers and even demands for an apology.

“There’s no story to talk about because it doesn’t exist. We know in football people write things to try and create situations that aren’t there.

“I spoke to (President Mario Cognini) and he too was astonished. There has never been any request for an apology or anything else. I don’t give much importance to it.

“I said from the first day I met with the club owners that I let them know how I was. The only way I know how to be is honest and upfront. You can like that or not.

“The only way to grow is to express your thoughts. It can leave you open to criticism, but I have always been very clear with you the media and the club owners. It’s not an issue.

“The fans have always stood by the team. So have the club owners. I cannot see things any other way. If there is constructive criticism, then those who pay for their tickets can have their say in banners and we have to accept it, analyse it and together try to improve ourselves as a total unit.”

The focus then moved to tomorrow’s game and repeating the extraordinary 4-1 result at San Siro in September.

“Every game is a final for us and we believe we can compete with teams who have invested heavily to earn a place in the Champions League.

“I hope this will be a top level match for people who appreciate quality in football. I tried to integrate all those who arrived in January and those who were recovering from injuries.

“Considering what happened in Milan, I am sure Inter will try to make up for that night. I expect it to be a game of such quality that people who watch will be proud and we’ll be proud to win it.

“We have studied the various different systems my colleague Roberto Mancini has used this season, so we are prepared in this sense for whatever he decides to use.

“Inter are more attacking now than they were before, much more, even if they don’t finish as well. Naturally anyone who attacks more leaves themselves more open at the back, so I expect an entertaining match tomorrow.”

Mati Fernandez is suspended, while Felipe Melo sits out a ban for Inter.

“Milan Badelj has been in training, but only for two sessions. There’s no point having him on the bench just for the sake of it, so he won’t be there tomorrow.

“There are few long-term projects in football, but my fundamental project is to continually improve the individual performance of a player on tactical, physical, psychological and human levels.

“The aim is to win, because that is the point of football. It is not sufficient to play better than your opponent, you also have to win. That is my project.”
