The Viola fought back from a goal down to win 2-1 in stoppages with Khouma Babacar, going two points clear of Roma in third place and sending the Nerazzurri down to fifth.

It is the first time this season that the Tuscans have turned a losing situation into a victory.

“Inter took a decision to sit deep and even their forward wide players did mainly defensive work, so that didn’t allow us to build the pace we wanted to,” Sousa told Sky Sport Italia and Mediaset Premium.

“There was intensity and vertical passing, I was pleased to see the team step up like that. When a side doesn’t have possession and sits deep, we often allow them to dictate the tempo, but we kept believing and stepped it up after the break.

“I saw a lot of character and my team is becoming more mature in certain situations. I am happy, as to win a game like this when fighting back gives confidence.

“Inter have a very strong goalkeeper and he often saved the result this season as well as in the first half. This was a deserved victory. I always say the best form of defence is to attack and keep the ball.

“Every match is important, above all against sides with an extraordinary squad and individual quality. I think Inter can get back to the kind of form they had at the start of the season, because they have the quality to do that.

“Federico Bernardeschi is maturing, he is learning to attack out wide as well as through central channels. Now he needs to learn how to score more regularly, as he had the opportunities this season, but it is a consistent process of maturation and that will bring him to eventually be sharper in front of goal too. He does deserve a place in the Italy squad.”

Fiorentina have now won their last four meetings with Inter, home and away, the best streak since the 1940s.

“We are doing very well and now the objective is simply to maintain our style of football so we can make the fans and club happy.

“We are improving our emotional control of the game and today had the patience to believe in ourselves to the very end.”
