Fiorentina Coach Paulo Sousa admits he was “very upset” by Mauro Zarate’s three-game ban – 'I knew he'd miss the Roma match…'

The striker was banned for three games for grabbing Jeison Murillo by the neck in the win over Inter on Sunday night, with the Viola planning to appeal.

“I was very upset,” Sousa fumed in his Press conference ahead of the Europa League game with Tottenham Hotspur.

“In my reading of Italian football it was clear that he’d miss the match against Roma. My prediction was right, I wasn’t wrong.

“Now it’s up to us to work to limit what I feel was undeserved.”

Sousa’s side have dropped off the Scudetto pace in recent weeks, was the win over the Nerazzurri a sign that they’re returning to top form at the right time?

“I’ve read that the team has dropped off, but I’ll say that the individual player data isn’t different from September.

“We have had to change a few players, however, there have been injuries, [Federico] Bernardeschi playing deeper, Borja [Valero] playing further up or deeper…

“That affects matches and belief, even in terms of defending and pressing, and it makes the condition look different.”
