Paulo Sousa hopes Fiorentina can “get back to being ourselves” after a 4-1 defeat and hailed Roma’s performance.

The Viola were certainly unlucky early on, as the opening goal was marginally offside, the second took a huge deflection and they lost two players to injury in the first 34 minutes.

“It was a game in which more or less everything happened. Hopefully it’s the last time and we’ve used up all the bad luck in this match,” Sousa told Sky Sport Italia.

“Matias Vecino needs to be examined, as it’s muscular, whereas Borja Valero has a bad bruise on an ankle where he’s already had problems.

“Roma have great technique, but are also physically in great shape with their transitions, so we have to keep the team compact and not get stretched out.

“I always try to see something positive. We know that during a season there are moments when some players are not at their best. The quality of the team is supposed to get us through those moments, but the collective performance after the second goal was not the best either.

“We cannot underestimate the Roma performance, which was of a very high level this evening. They didn’t give us any reference points.”

Fiorentina are now three points adrift of third place, so do they still harbour ambitions for that Champions League spot?

“We won’t hide the fact we still believe in third place. I hope the next few days off can help the team recover physically and psychologically so we can be ourselves again from the next match.

“We must be realistic and keep the same ambition and courage, but with realism. We knew there were teams built to compete for the Scudetto and Champions League places.

“We earned ourselves this opportunity by playing great football and that is what we must focus on doing now.”
