FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio described the type of “leader” Italy want to replace Antonio Conte after Euro 2016.

Today, as had been expected for many months now, Conte formally told the Federation that he would be stepping down from the Azzurri bench following this summer’s tournament in France.

Conte is widely expected to take over at Premier League club Chelsea next season.

“I will wait for the friendlies to evaluate a new Coach,” Tavecchio told reporters this evening.

“The choice of a new CT will be made at a smaller cost. He must be capable of starting a FIGC ‘cantera’ that is functional for the entire football system.

“In future the Italy Coaches must leave a trace of their work, so it can become the heritage of the FIGC.

“What will the next manager be like? Only a leader can guide the Nazionale. The best Coach available to lead the Nazionale will be taken into consideration.

“Conte deserves credit for recovering the spirit of sacrifice and pride in the Italy squad. I have not spoken to Conte with regards his destination.”
