Roma are planning to wholly restructure the sporting director role as Walter Sabatini prepares to leave.

The current sporting director announced that he will be leaving the Giallorossi at the end of June, for reasons that are believed to be related with President James Pallotta's interference in his work.

Italian media are speculating heavily on the name of the possible successor, with La Gazzetta dello Sport suggesting Marcello Carli and Manuele Gerolin, and the Corriere dello Sport going for Frederic Massara, Pasquale Sensibile and former Roma full-back Federico Balzaretti.

However, the club is expected to change much more than just a name. The Corriere reports that the figure of the sporting director will lose most of its power and be replaced by a team that will coordinate with the President and the Coach.

Coach Luciano Spalletti will make most of the decisions as to which players to buy, and the transfer team will assist him. They will report also to Pallotta's right-hand man Alex Zecca, who will have the authority to weigh in on the transfer team's decisions.

Pallotta also wants new methods to be employed, with greater reliance on statistics and football data. Sabatini's reluctance to make full use of these methods is believed to be one of the reasons behind the split.
