The Germany defender spoke to Deutsche Presse-Agentur about his first campaign in Serie A.

“Things didn’t start in the best way for me, because I arrived with an injury, but then things sorted themselves out,” said the man on loan from Stuttgart.

“I went through a difficult moment in which things weren’t working for me or the team. I think back to the game against Torino, where I made a mistake, and at that time it was really tough for me.

“But I was never afraid to keep going. I knew that to emerge from that situation I had to grow up and I think I proved myself now.

“I am really happy here and what the media writes must be accepted in a professional manner. At no moment did I doubt my decision to come to Roma.

“I think that I have proved what I can do, so now it’s up to others to decide whether I stay at Roma. I am very relaxed on this issue.

“If someone asked us if we’d sign for third place, today we probably would do. Clearly we are coming off a series of victories, but there’s no need to get ahead of ourselves with title talk.”

Rudiger has been called up by Germany for friendlies against England and Italy.

“As I am now living in Rome, obviously playing against the Azzurri is a special test for me. I hope to meet a few of my club teammates, but the concentration is naturally focused on having a good game and winning in front of the home fans.

“I feel at ease in the centre-back role, but I have played right-back with Stuttgart, Germany and Roma. I have no problems in either role, so I play where the Coach feels I can best help the squad.

“I think that I have improved over the last few months. It’s still a bit too early now to talk about my chances of making it to Euro 2016.”
