The 28-year-old has been called up by the Belgian national team for a friendly against Portugal next Tuesday.

The game's venue has been changed from Brussels to the Portuguese city Leiria in the wake of the terrorist bombings that shook the host country.

“I had a friend at the airport and he told me it was terrible,” Mertens told Belgian outlet Sporza. “How can something like this happen in Belgium? On Wednesday, here at the national team, we talked of nothing else.”

Mertens also commented on his club Napoli, in which he usually plays as a sub.

“It isn't easy to change a formation that keeps winning. We showed a few novelties in the Europa League, but we were unlucky against Villarreal.

“Personally I feel like a starter for Napoli, even when I begin from the bench. I heard that [Diego Armando] Maradona paid me compliments. Having his support makes me proud.

“The death of Johan Cruyff? It's very unfortunate. It is a black day for the Netherlands and the world of football.”
