“We would’ve been better off without the break for international duty, but must try to resume where we left off,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

Inter are in joint fourth place with Fiorentina, five points adrift of Roma in the final Champions League spot.

“There is optimism for the last eight games. Roma have the advantage for third place, but there are some difficult matches coming up. We’ve got no choice, we just have to win lots of them.

“We know that in our position we have to win and hope for other results to go our way. Unfortunately this season we had these hiccups in games we didn’t deserve to lose or draw, but these things happen. Now we hope to recover what we threw away in that month and a half.

“I hope the defence can return to being as solid as it was at the start. I think you should always believe you can do it, even in the most difficult moments. As long as there are points up for grabs, you must believe. All we need is for Roma to get two games wrong and we’re right there.

“Of course, when you are the one doing the chasing, you can’t make a mistake either. Roma are coming off a long run of victories, so the rules of probability suggest they’re due a couple of defeats.”

Torino have struggled of late, but Coach Giampiero Ventura has been tipped as a possible heir to Antonio Conte on the Italy bench.

“He has enough experience to do anything and is a good man, so yes, I see him in that role,” added Mancini.

“It’s never easy against Torino, as they always make you struggle, even if they are not in good shape. They have talented players and a fine Coach.

“Our main problem is we don’t finish games off early, so we tend to concede costly late goals. If we managed to score a couple extra, like against Palermo or Bologna, we’d have more relaxed ends to the matches.”
