Roma Coach Luciano Spalletti may face the derby against Lazio with a surprise 4-2-3-1 instead of the diamond midfield.

The derby of the capital, staging one of the most ferocious football rivalries in Europe, kicks off today at 14:00 UK time.

According to Il Messaggero, Spalletti spent his last training sessions ahead of the game fielding two teams against each other, both deployed in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

This goes against the consensus that the Giallorossi would make use of a diamond midfield in a 4-3-1-2 line-up.

This goes against the consensus that the Giallorossi would make use of a diamond midfield in a 4-3-1-2 line-up.

Reportedly Spalletti's two front-lines were composed of Edin Dzeko backed up by Iago Falque, Diego Perotti and Stephan El Shaarawy on one side, and Francesco Totti supported by Mohamed Salah, Radja Nainggolan and Emerson on the other.

The Dzeko formation saw Seydou Keita and Miralem Pjanic as defensive mids, while the Totti version had Daniele De Rossi and Kevin Strootman at the back.

Roma so far have fielded the diamond midfield in most of their important games, including Fiorentina, Inter and the home game against Real Madrid, but they may switch for the derby.
