Several other famous faces paid tribute to Maldini outside his memorial service at Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio.

“Cesare Maldini was a fantastic person, always friendly and helpful,” Clarence Seedorf said.

“He left a lot to football, in his children, in Paolo who is a true friend.”

Giuseppe Marotta represented Juventus at the service.

“I used to watch Cesare Maldini on TV, games in black and white with Cesare Maldini and [Gaetano] Scirea. They generated unforgettable emotions.

“I’ve also taken him as an example as a director, especially in terms of the calmness that he was able to convey.”

FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio described Maldini as “a huge loss for football”, while Fabio Cannavaro said he represented “the values of sport”.

On his Facebook page, Diego Maradona offered "condolences to my friend Paolo Maldini", describing his father as "a great man and a great professional".
