Cagliari have won approval from the city council to construct a new 21,000-seater stadium.

The Isolani’s stadium woes have been well-publicised, with Sant’Elia deemed unsafe and the club disagreeing with the local council.

In 2012, under Massimo Cellino’s ownership, Cagliari played their final home games of the season over 1,000km away in Trieste.

However, the city council has now approved the club’s plans for a new stadium by 25 votes with one abstention.

However, the city council has now approved the club’s plans for a new stadium by 25 votes with one abstention.

The new ground will have 21,000 covered seats, and will be a four-star stadium capable of hosting Europa League and Champions League matches.

The project will cost around €55m, with the intention being to open it in 2020 for the club’s centenary.

Now the final design must be submitted with the details of funding, before the project goes to public tender.

If there are no problems with the final stages, work is expected to start in January 2017.
