Palermo assistant manager Giovanni Tedesco has resigned after Walter Novellino’s dismissal.

The sacking was in the air after last night’s 3-0 home defeat to Lazio, which saw fans protest by throwing fireworks on to the pitch and setting their flags alight in the stands.

Novellino confirmed today he had been relieved of his duties and Davide Ballardini is expected to be appointed.

It’d be a return for Ballardini, who was fired after just seven games in charge.

“I am from Palermo, I love this jersey and I hope to be back as a protagonist one day,” Tedesco told Stadio News.

“I can’t seem to give anything to Palermo and therefore I have to leave. It’s disappointing. There was no problem with Novellino. Quite simply if I’m not doing any good, I may as well get out of the way.

“Palermo have really not made themselves look good, but I don’t want to justify the actions of the fans.

“They need to stay close to the squad. I realise it’s not easy, but these lads need to be supported. You can only achieve safety when all working in the same direction.”

Tedesco had been caretaker manager at Palermo with Guillermo Barros Schelotto from Week 22 to 24, then remained on as part of the staff under Beppe Iachini and Novellino.
