Cristian Brocchi thanked predecessor Sinisa Mihajlovic for “a congratulatory message” after Milan beat Sampdoria.

The Coach made his debut just five days after replacing sacked Miha and emerged from Marassi with a 1-0 victory thanks to Carlos Bacca’s strike.

“I saw more than the five per cent new ideas I had been hoping for,” confessed Brocchi on Mediaset Premium.

“In many situations the players did exactly what I asked and Vincenzo Montella was even forced to change system during the first half.

“The quality of a side is raised when the mentality holds strong. We tried to play in the opposition half and control the game, but there are still some principles missing that we need to work on a great deal.”

Has President Silvio Berlusconi sent word of his appreciation for the performance?

“I haven’t heard from the President yet. I thanked the squad for all they gave me and the way they fought on the pitch.

“I also wish to thank Sinisa, who sent me a congratulatory message for the victory. It was a sign of real class and I thank him.”

Mario Balotelli unusually worked very hard and helped take the pressure off teammates by earning a series of free kicks.

“Balotelli was fantastic and only lacked a goal tonight. The role of trequartista is important for me, as it gives us superiority in midfield. I don’t necessarily want a creative type who wants the ball to feet, as it’s not a solid position, but all about finding the right space behind the strikers.

“The President has always asked for a certain type of Milan, the team that imposes its football on the opposition. The only advice he gave me over the last few days was to work on the psychological profile of the players. I spoke to each of them and realised many of them want to prove themselves in these final weeks of the season.”

If Brocchi is not confirmed on the senior Milan bench, will he return to the Primavera youth side or seek another Serie A job elsewhere?

“This is not my objective. Right now I want to do as well as possible. I achieved my dream of being Milan Coach, now I want to earn the chance to do my work here on a more permanent basis.”
