Verona’s win over Milan wasn’t enough, as Carpi beating Empoli has consigned them to Serie B.

The Butei were one of the surprise packages of last season, finishing in 13th-place, three points above city rivals Chievo.

With Giampaolo Pazzini joining last season’s Capocannoniere Luca Toni up-front, it was hoped this season would see Andrea Mandorlini’s side push for a top-half finish.

However, after a disastrous start to the season which saw Verona without a win from their first 14 League games, Mandorlini was sacked in November, with former Juventus Coach Luigi Del Neri replacing him.

Del Neri did start a small revival, with his side going unbeaten in five games across January and February, but one win in their last five games meant they had to beat Milan to avoid being mathematically condemned to Serie B.

Luca Bigliardi’s late free-kick meant they retained their Serie A status for a few more hours, but when Carpi beat Empoli, Verona were doomed to relegation.

The Biancorossi's win lifts them three points clear of the relegation zone, but they still face a battle with Palermo and Frosinone to stay in the top flight.
