A wondergoal from Saul Niguez gave Atletico Madrid a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in their Champions League semi-final.

The Spanish side welcomed Pep Guardiola’s men to Vicente Calderon having knocked-out holders Barcelona in the previous round.

Atleti immediately went on the attack, and it took just 11 minutes for Diego Simeone’s men to break the deadlock.

Saul picked up the ball in midfield, before dribbling past three Bayern players and curling the ball into the net with his left foot.

French international Antoine Griezmann should have doubled their advantage, but fired straight at Manuel Neuer after being played through with half an hour played.

Despite dominating possession, the German side were insipid in the first half – Robert Lewandowski touched the ball just once in the opposition box – but seemed to liven up in the second.

David Alaba was inches from levelling the game and the tie on 55 minutes, but his long-range shot rattled the underside of the Atleti crossbar and bounced back into play.

With the Bavarians ramping-up the pressure, Simeone’s side reverted to their familiar defensive stance.

The tie could have swung either way with 15 minutes remaining, Jan Oblak beating away a rasping drive from Arturo Vidal before Fernando Torres hit the post at the other end.

As the clock wound down the tension threatened to boil over, and Neuer was booked for pushing Koke to the floor after the midfielder had been fouled by substitute Medhi Benatia.

There were to be no more goals in the match, as Atletico preserved yet another Champions League clean sheet – they haven't conceded a goal in this competition at Vicente Calderon all season.

The second leg will be played at Allianz Arena next Tuesday.
