“This is going to be a complicated game against a Roma side in great shape. You can’t ignore Luciano Spalletti’s chase for second,” noted Gasp.

“However, we are relaxed, free of pressure and have 10th place to defend, which keeps us in the top half of the table.

“I told the players we’ve achieved our objective of safety, so now let’s go looking for the bonuses. The season progressed in a positive way.

“Apart from Mattia Perin, everyone is available, as only Alessio Cerci has a slight fitness concern. Frankly I’d never had this many players at my disposal.

“Roma are, with Juventus and Napoli, the strongest sides in Serie A and were candidates for the Scudetto starting out. Spalletti did well to recover Roma’s best selves.

“They had done well under Rudi Garcia for two years, then I don’t know what went wrong.”

Part of the reason for Roma’s revival was signing Diego Perotti from Genoa in January.

“Perotti did give something more to a squad that was already strong, while Stephan El Shaarawy is also doing well.

“Perotti was important for us, as was Iago Falque last season, both on the field and in the locker room. We remain fond of them and they found in us the right environment to prove themselves.”

Gasperini assured there’s no point betting on a 0-0 stalemate between Genoa and Roma.

“We earned victories and a few too many defeats. The cult of the draw is not part of our mentality. Our determination to seek three points can make us over-do it at times, but that is part of our philosophy.”

Gasp had a special message for Crotone, who earned their first ever promotion into Serie A last night.

“I saw all the footage of the festivities and it was joyful for me, having been a Crotone Coach. From the amateur leagues to Serie A, you can play good football in that sort of situation.

“They dominated the Serie B tournament and credit goes to everyone, starting with their Coach Ivan Juric, who I spoke to a few days ago.

“The club and directors are smart and I still have a bond with that city.”
