Luca Toni admits he “was meant to retire five years ago, but I just kept scoring…” and hasn’t decided on his future yet.

The Verona striker is calling it quits at the end of the season, as he’ll turn 39 on May 26.

“When you know that it really is the last game, you feel some good sensations and some less good,” he told Radio Deejay.

“Talking to my family, I decided this was the right moment to close this wonderful career.

“What will I do in future? My wife keeps asking me that too. I have to decide. I’ve got to do something.”

Toni also had spells abroad with Bayern Munich and Al-Nasr.

“Working in the Middle East taught me that it’s so wonderful in Italy. Their football can grow, but have not yet reached a high professional level.”

He was asked which strikers are ready to take on his mantle for Italy.

“Serie A has not given us many forwards who score a lot of goals. The Coach will have to decide on the right men. I like Gianluca Lapadula, as making the step up to Serie A could give him an extra boost of enthusiasm.”

Now that Toni is hanging up his boots, Francesco Totti is clinging on for one more year at Roma, despite turning 40 in September.

“He made history with Roma and he must decide when to stop. It’s not an easy decision to make, especially if he scores every time he comes off the bench.”
