Simone Inzaghi has Europa League regrets, but is glad Lazio fought their way to a win at Carpi even down to nine men.

It was a frankly bizarre match, as Jerry Mbakogu saw two first half penalties parried by Federico Marchetti.

In the final stages of the 3-1 victory, Lucas Biglia received a second yellow card and Filip Djordjevic was sent off for a straight red.

“Djordjevic should not have got himself into that situation,” Inzaghi told Rai Sport.

“He is a generous player and was running when he was pushed by Gaetano Letizia. Perhaps it was right that both of them were booked instead, as it’s a shame I’ll have to do without Filip in the final round.

“This Lazio is hungry, relaxed and becoming increasingly aware of its capabilities. The team is giving me everything I ask for and wants to continue to the end of the season.

“We can win or lose, but the important thing is to put in the effort and have the right attitude. It’s a shame really that we missed out on the Europa League, but there were problems before I came in.”

What does the future hold for Inzaghi, who is only a caretaker manager?

“I have a good rapport with President Claudio Lotito, as he talks to you and wants to understand everything that is going on, then leaves you to get on with your work.

“The team is following me, we’ll see what happens, but with a relaxed state of mind. I have won at every youth level, now I am here and want to get the best out of my chances.”

Meanwhile, Simone’s older brother Pippo was again in the stands to cheer him on.

“Despite some criticising, we’ve seen what the last four or five Coaches have managed to do at Milan. Plus the club didn’t invest at all when he was there, as the team was put together from free agents and loans.

“I hope next season I’ll get to challenge him as Coaches in Serie A.”
