Genoa ran out 3-0 winners, thus confirming they’ll end the season ahead of their city rivals.

“The game was dictated by that early goal and we took a long while to recover from that, but Genoa were superior in terms of temperament,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“We were so close to getting back into the game, but the truth is we weren’t good enough. Genoa won deservedly and we can only give them a pat on the back.

“I did not see Genoa superior in technical terms, but rather in their temperament. It was all about the attitude.

“The fault is totally mine. The Coach can at times take credit when he’s not due and the blame when it wasn’t his fault.

“I really am struggling to explain the blackout of the last two games. When an entire season isn’t up to scratch, there are some errors in the squad, but I think in this match the players did what they could and I am the only one to blame.”

Sampdoria director Carlo Osti told Mediaset Premium that Montella needed to tell the club if this project could continue.

“I don’t know,” was his reply in the Press conference. “I still have a contract, we said we’d meet up after securing safety, even if we did it in a traumatic fashion.

“We’ll see if we can find common ground. What are my intentions? My intentions are to sit around a table and see if we like each other or not.

“The fans are absolutely right to be angry. We are disappointed for us, for the club and the fans, but in sport you can lose.

“The fans love us, but I don’t like to sit here defending myself.”
