According to the Corriere dello Sport, Pjanic's statements were made deliberately, with a view towards being offered a new contract with a higher salary.

Roma will have to draft a new contract for Pjanic regardless if they hope to establish a new purchase clause and not risk losing the player for the agreed€38m.

With wages of €4m per year, the 26-year-old is already among the Giallorossi's highest earners, but it is conceivable that his salary may go up again before the end of the summer.
