The Sampdoria Coach is one of the candidates to replace Antonio Conte after Euro 2016, having bickered with Blucerchiati directors following the Derby della Lanterna defeat to Genoa.

“If Italy were to call me, I’d spend two sleepless nights thinking about it,” Montella told the Corriere dello Sport newspaper.

“I think experience is a fundamental quality for that type of role. In the end, Italy are always there in the big international competitions. In my Euros, we reached the Final and lost to France. I won’t forget it.

“I have hope for the Azzurri this summer, especially as I really admire Conte.

“Where will I be next year? Surprises can happen from one moment to the next, but for now I see myself at Sampdoria.”

L’Aeroplanino has his own tip for the ideal Azzurri boss – the Premier League champion at Leicester City.

“I’d see Claudio Ranieri doing well for the Nazionale. He is a balanced man who has experienced so much in football and proved, not just this year, his quality.

“Leicester really have been a genuine fairy-tale. It is moving to realise the entire world cheered on a tiny club that last season was at risk of relegation and next term will face off with Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Football is marvellous because it is unpredictable, just like life.”

Montella was asked about his own management experiences.

“They are all wonderful, because I always learned and gave my best. I should say the most difficult spell of my career is the one I am having now at Sampdoria, but instead it is a more formative experience than the others.

“Clearly, you sleep better when you win, but you learn less. I was very happy at Fiorentina and it’s a marvellous city. We had good results, above expectations, but then my plans and those of the directors did not coincide.

“These things happen. I was happy everywhere I worked.”
