Inter Vice-President Javier Zanetti assures Mauro Icardi “is certainly staying,” but concedes FFP rules are a problem.

The Nerazzurri want to reinforce their squad after finishing fourth in Serie A, though President Erick Thohir has warned they must sell before buying.

“We have strong foundations to build an even more competitive side upon, without forgetting we must respect the Financial Fair Play parameters, which do penalise us,” Zanetti told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Will we sell our top stars? We’ll see, we still have to talk to Roberto Mancini to plan out next season.

“Icardi is certainly staying with us, as he is our captain.

“We are all working in the same direction. Thohir, Massimo Moratti and all of us and trying to do something more to get back to the top.”

There have been consistent reports Inter have a deal for Ever Banega, if he manages to leave Sevilla as a free agent.

“Banega is an important player and in the Argentina squad. He could certainly do well in any team,” replied Zanetti.

“We are back in the Europa League and that is important. It was a hard-fought campaign, with Juventus and Roma fighting back after poor starts.

“In January we dropped a lot of points and they proved costly. It is a starting point and our ambition is to become protagonists again.”
