San Siro hosted a Madrid Derby and a replay of the 2014 Champions League Final, which saw Carlo Ancelotti’s Real win in extra time. It was a familiar arena for ex-Inter midfielder Diego Simeone, former Juventus star Zinedine Zidane and sometime Milan striker Fernando Torres.

The Merengues got off to a strong start and within three minutes Jan Oblak used his leg to parry from point-blank range when Casemiro got on the end of a Gareth Bale free kick.

The deadlock was broken from another Toni Kroos set play, flicked on by Bale for Sergio Ramos to get the tap-in, but the defender appeared to be narrowly offside. Remarkably, Ramos also scored the last time these sides met in the 2014 Final.

It took a long time for Atleti to get back into the game, as Antoine Griezmann fired straight at Keylor Navas and dominating possession didn’t allow Simeone’s men to create many genuine chances.

Straight after the restart Pepe clumsily clattered into Torres for a penalty, but Griezmann stepped up and blasted his spot-kick on to the crossbar. Griezmann has failed to convert two out of four penalties this season and both were against Real Madrid.

Dani Carvajal went off injured and in tears, while Diego Godin’s header was wide and Stefan Savic failed to get the tap-in from a yard.

Saul Niguez volleyed just off target and Real Madrid failed to make the most of a counter-attack when Karim Benzema blasted at Oblak’s chest.

Real had a triple chance to finish the game on 78 minutes, but Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo were denied by a series of desperate blocks and Savic goal-line clearance.

Moments later Atletico Madrid got their equaliser, as Yannick Carrasco got in front of his marker to fire in a Juanfran cross at the back post.

Deep into stoppages Sergio Ramos took a yellow card for the team by stopping Carrasco’s counter with a blatant foul.

Just like the Madrid Derby in 2014, these city rivals took the Champions League Final to extra time. The momentum was with Atleti and they seemed visibly fresher too, as several of Zidane’s men were struggling with cramp.

There were few real chances, but Simeone lost both Filipe Luis and Koke – potential penalty takers – to injury. Lucas Hernandez performed a decisive block in the box on Lucas Vazquez.

It went to a penalty shoot-out and everyone converted until Juanfran struck the base of the upright for Atleti.

There was no time to recover, as Cristiano Ronaldo scored with confidence despite a calf problem that badly affected his performance throughout the Final to give Real Madrid their 11th Champions League.
