Giuseppe Rossi’s agent said he “should have chosen” to represent the USA rather than Italy after a complex career.

The Fiorentina striker was born in New Jersey, but moved to his father’s nation as a teenager to pursue a career in football.

“In hindsight, going back to when he chose between representing Italy or the USA, we should have chosen the USA,” agent Andrea Pastorello told Radio Bruno.

When still a Manchester United reserve, Rossi turned down a training camp call-up from US Coach Bruno Arena in 2006.

‘Pepito’ has since played club football in England, Spain and Italy, but his career was wracked by injury problems.

He eventually managed only 29 senior caps for Italy, scoring seven goals.

Rossi spent the last six months on loan at Levante, as he was not playing regularly for Fiorentina.
