Juventus President Andrea Agnelli warned the Italian system makes it “more difficult to compete” in Europe.

The Bianconeri are at the forefront of calcio and were the first club to build their own stadium.

“For us Italian clubs, it is more difficult to compete on an international level, not just because of the revenue, but also the systems we have in place and therefore our ability to plan in the medium-long term,” Agnelli told Sky Sport Italia.

“Barcelona and Chelsea, for example, made magnificent use of the last 10-15 years, which is ensuring they are in houses all over the world at the click of a button.

“We have to work on that. At this moment I see enormous margins of improvement for the way the Lega is run and the Federation, but also on a European level. The more Italian football grows, the more Juventus grow.

“(FIGC President Carlo) Tavecchio introduced Italian Financial Fair Play, but it is a system that penalises excellence and is suited to the vast majority of clubs, so I’d say it was a law made for Lega Pro.

“The introduction of players who grew up in the youth systems is good, but we have not been given the time to adjust because they cannot remain consistent when loaned out to play.

“In Italy we need reserve teams who can allow the bigger clubs to overcome this problem. The only positive is the introduction of Federal training centres.”

Juve have always had a rough rapport with the Nazionale, including last week when refusing to release Leonardo Bonucci for a training camp even though he was suspended for the Coppa Italia Final.

“Bonucci was not on vacation, he was training with his teammates. Preparing a big match training against a defender like Bonucci is different from preparing against a youth team player.

“Also, Bonucci is an important figure in the locker room. Making him leave just for some fitness tests seems crazy to me. The idea of the training camps during the year in general are crazy too.”

Finally, Agnelli was asked who his favourite all-time player at Juventus was.

“Paulo Montero. Montero is the Number One.”
