Pierluigi Collina visited the Italy squad today to explain the new refereeing approach at Euro 2016. “It’s important we all speak the same language on the pitch.”

The UEFA refereeing designator was at the Coverciano training camp with video evidence to lecture the players and staff on how the regulations will be interpreted.

“It is important that Coaches, players and referees all speak the same language on the pitch,” Collina told reporters.

“We discussed the development of the game and how the rules have changed. The big new thing is that when a player inside the box makes an honest attempt to play the ball and arrives late, he will not be punished with a red card, plus penalty and ban for the next game. It’ll only be a yellow card and a penalty.

“I repeat, this is for fouls that happen inside the penalty area and have as their objective reaching the ball. Outside the area, the rules remain the same, as with unnecessarily tough tackles and handball.

“There is another slight adjustment: anyone who was fouled and suffered a slight injury is no longer forced to leave the field. Until now, the team that committed the foul was rewarded, but now he can remain on the pitch if the treatment is brief.

“The team reacted well, there were many of them interested in getting deeper into these issues. The objective was to put the team in the condition to play at their best.

“Football must always preserve the physical integrity of its players. The athletes must understand they have to respect their opponents and not risk an injury that could damage their future prospects.”

With the death of boxing icon Muhammad Ali, Collina wanted to pay tribute to one of his greatest sayings.

“Referees can float like a butterfly through a game and every now and then sting like a bee.”
