The Azzurri fly out for their base in Montpellier this evening and are in Group E with Belgium, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland.

“The group is united, the lads are in great shape, concentrated and hungry for victory,” Tavecchio told reporters.

“We want to do well at the Euros and have great expectations around this tournament, because we haven’t won the European Championships for many years.”

The only Italian victory was as hosts in 1968, though they did reach the Final in 2000 and 2012.

“Under the Coach’s orders, there will be no wives or girlfriends at the training camp. In their free time, everyone can do what they want.”

There were tests over the last few days to see if the venues in France are ready amid fears of terror attacks.

“We have faith in a great nation like France who will be able to protect the event.”
