Italy’s reserves failed to impress David Swan in a futile Euro 2016 defeat to the Republic of Ireland.

Salvatore Sirigu – 4

Didn’t inspire great confidence in the first half with some poor distribution and a flap at a cross delivered after a short corner. Backed that up with another missed dive at a cross in the second half, and a misguided charge out to the ball into the box that saw Robbie Brady score.

Andrea Barzagli – 6

Italy’s reserves failed to impress David Swan in a futile Euro 2016 defeat to the Republic of Ireland.

Salvatore Sirigu – 4

Didn’t inspire great confidence in the first half with some poor distribution and a flap at a cross delivered after a short corner. Backed that up with another missed dive at a cross in the second half, and a misguided charge out to the ball into the box that saw Robbie Brady score.

Andrea Barzagli – 6

Found it difficult without the protective structure around him that was created in the first two games, but managed well despite having quicker players running at him for large periods throughout the 90 minutes. Was lucky not to get booked for an obvious foul on James McClean in the first half.

Leonardo Bonucci – 5

Was put in an unfair position by Antonio Conte, having to captain the team while ensuring he did not get booked in a meaningless game. That doesn’t excuse his poor touch and subsequent dive that allowed Wes Hoolahan a one-on-one with Sirigu, and losing Robbie Brady for the goal.

Angelo Ogbonna – 6

Had a better time than Barzagli on the opposite side in dealing with the Irish pace and physicality. Also had slightly more protection from Mattia De Sciglio than Barzagli did from Federico Bernardeschi.

Federico Bernardeschi – 5

Didn’t offer the offensive punch that was required, and the Irish were having so much success down Italy’s right flank that he was taken off not long into the second half for a more defensive option in Matteo Darmian.

Stefano Sturaro – 6

He gave the sort of performance you’d expect from a player of his type. Not entirely his fault that Italy needed something else in the middle – he performed his duties well, albeit did not use the ball effectively.

Thiago Motta – 5

Was slow at times to get himself in position to receive the ball from his defenders, particularly Bonucci, who at times had to direct Thiago Motta into the right space. Was lucky to get away with a dreadful pass across the penalty area to Ogbonna.

Alessandro Florenzi – 5

Italy needed more of his drive from midfield, especially with the ball. On a pitch where passing was difficult, it favoured players creating superiority by beating the opposition one-on-one. Conte highlighted Florenzi as a player capable of doing this pre-match, but we saw little of it.

Mattia De Sciglio – 5

Protected Ogbonna well, but had a horrendous night with the ball. Bad touches aplenty leading to a healthy number of Irish throw-ins.

Simone Zaza – 6

Had little service, but still looked mildly threatening when presented with half-chances. His partnership with Immobile rarely worked in qualifying, and it didn’t work here.

Ciro Immobile – 6

A story similar to Zaza’s. Had little opportunity to grow into the game – ‘feeding on scraps’ would be a generous description of what he was left to work with from his teammates.

Matteo Darmian – 6

Successfully reduced the number of threatening Irish attacks down Italy’s right side, which you can only assume was the function Conte had in mind for his introduction. Not a great threat going forward, but then not many Italy players were.

Lorenzo Insigne – 6

Made an almost immediate impact, hitting the post after a trademark run from the left side. Looked busier than any other Italian forward or midfielder, but failed to create much after that.

Stephan El Shaarawy – no rating

Had eight minutes to try to improve Italy’s offensive efforts late on. Not enough to make any sort of impact.
