Martin O’Neill hailed “a great achievement” as Ireland beat Italy to qualify for a Round of 16 encounter with hosts France.

The Azzurri made eight changes to the line-up, as they were already sure of top spot in Group E.

“This was very special,” said the Republic of Ireland Coach.

“The players and fans fed off each other and it was rather emotional at the end. We should have had a clear-cut penalty, but it doesn’t matter now.

“Spirit alone doesn’t win matches. You need ability and we showed ability too, but we never give up.

“To come out of this group is a great achievement. I am absolutely thrilled.”

Ireland won this game, drew 1-1 with Sweden and were beaten 3-0 by Belgium.

They will face hosts France on Sunday at the Stade de Lyon.

“France will be strong favourites and we will need to play as strongly we did tonight on Sunday.”
