The appointment as Coach of the Diavolo is a great opportunity for Montella, who was considered one of Italy's most promising tacticians before he floundered in his year at Sampdoria.

“As of tomorrow I'll officially be Milan's Coach,” the Aeroplanino told Premium Sport. “When there's a big change, there's always a lot of emotion going with it.

“As a child I used to dream of playing for Milan, but as I told Galliani, they never signed me. My idol was [Marco] Van Basten.”

Montella was then asked about the transfer market, and what strategies the Rossoneri were looking to pursue.

“We all need to sit down, this week we'll start working. Our objective is to return to greatness in Italy and in Europe.

“It's a tough job but I'm convinced we'll make it. The difference is made by the players, so we need to get their performances to improve.”
