Luca Toni can’t wait for tonight’s “usual battle” between Germany and Italy, but admits the Azzurri amazed him at Euro 2016.

It kicks off in Bordeaux at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT) and the Germans have never beaten Italy in a major tournament, despite eight attempts.

“It will be the usual battle between two teams with an incredible tradition,” ex-Bayern Munich striker Toni told Bild newspaper.

He was also on the field when the Nazionale knocked Germany out of the 2006 World Cup on their way to the trophy.

“Since Euro 2012 Germany have improved a great deal. They deserved to win the World Cup, but you must watch out, as we are dangerous.”

So far Antonio Conte’s men have beaten Belgium, Sweden and reigning European Champions Spain.

“Until the start of the tournament, it was unimaginable that Italy could do this well. I did not believe they could get these results. My hope was that if we managed a decent start, the Azzurri could then be a threat for everyone.

“The secret of this success is Conte’s mentality. The team plays with pride and passion, just the way he likes it.”

When these sides met in March, Germany won the friendly match 4-1.

“I don’t think there will be many goals. Joachim Löw will be eager for revenge after the 2-1 defeat in Euro 2012.”
