Emanuele Giaccherini said Italy have “lost a champion” in Antonio Conte, “a man who created a war machine of a side.”
The Azzurri went out of Euro 2016 in the quarter-final last night, losing a sudden death penalty shoot-out to Germany.
“I hope the people remember this group, because we gave everything, our heart and soul,” Giaccherini told Sky Sport Italia at Milan’s Malpensa Airport.
“It is only right that this Nazionale is celebrated. When it comes to penalties, unfortunately anyone can get it wrong. It’s always 50-50 in those circumstances.”
Conte now moves on to Chelsea and Giampiero Ventura will take over the Azzurri bench.
“We are losing a champion, a man who created a war machine of a side. We’ll see what happens next.”
