Luciano Spalletti believes “this won’t be Francesco Totti’s final season” as a Roma player. “He’ll get what he deserves.”

The club legend recently penned a new contract, set to expire in June 2017, and is expected to take up a directorial role after that, despite the fact he turns 40 in September.

“The right way to deal with Totti is what we did last season,” noted Spalletti in a long Press conference.

The club legend recently penned a new contract, set to expire in June 2017, and is expected to take up a directorial role after that, despite the fact he turns 40 in September.

“The right way to deal with Totti is what we did last season,” noted Spalletti in a long Press conference.

“It also depends on what we put into practice. Last year he could’ve been used more. Just as I didn’t agree when everyone said he had to play from the start, I don’t agree now when people say this is his last year. I don’t believe it is.

“I am not the person who can say when Totti will retire. Neither can you,” the Coach told reporters.

“As far as I am concerned, he must be given the opportunity to keep playing. You want to make him stop! Totti can do what he wants. Why put so much pressure on this as his last season?

“It’s not fair to treat him as if he’s going on one final tour of the country. You want Totti to stop in order to destroy him psychologically. If he steps on to the pitch knowing it’s his last time, he won’t have the right mentality. And this after you made such a fuss claiming I was the one who wanted to make him quit!

“I evaluate what I see on the pitch. I will never give Totti a free ride, nor will I be biased against him. He gets what he deserves, as everybody does with me.”
