As expected, Andriy Shevchenko has been appointed Coach of Ukraine with ex-Milan men Mauro Tassotti and Andrea Maldera in his staff.

The former Rossoneri striker was already an assistant to Mykhailo Fomenko during Euro 2016, when the team failed to score a single goal.

He has now signed a contract that runs to the end of 2018 World Cup qualifying.

“It's an emotional moment and a great honour for me. My first task is creating a real unit who are able to achieve results. I also want to help the team win back the supporters' respect with the quality of our performances.

“We will search for some young players but my main criteria are discipline, organisation, balance, commitment and motivation.”

It had been rumoured that the sudden departure from Milan of Tassotti and tactical expert Maldera this week was so they could join Sheva in his new job.

That proved to be the case, as they are part of his Ukraine staff with Raul Riancho.
