According to Sport, Barça Coach Luis Enrique personally held talks with Lupi sporting director Walter Sabatini, as Enrique is a former Roma Coach.

It’s thought the two clubs have agreed on a €10m fee for the Belgian international, who is surplus to requirements after the capture of Samuel Umtiti from Lyon.

Sabatini’s negotiations with Vermaelen’s entourage are also believed to have reached a positive conclusion, so a transfer could be confirmed in the coming days.

The centre-back is thought to have agreed a three-year contract worth €3.5m per season.

The 30-year-old made just six La Liga starts last season, though he did manage to score a goal.
