Colombia international Muriel seemed to be in fine fettle, as he broke the deadlock after running from midfield and waltzed round the goalkeeper.

Fabio Quagliarella rattled the crossbar and had a goal ruled offside, but Muriel got the second by making the most of a smart Patrik Schick back-heel flick.

Ante Budimir finished the rout on a Karol Linetty through ball.

Sampdoria go on to face Cagliari or Spal in the next round.

Crotone crashed out at the first hurdle against recently-relegated Hellas Verona at the Stadio Bentegodi.

Midfielder Marco Fossati latched on to a rebound early on and Simy drew level with his angled drive, but with 10 minutes to go Romulo sent Franco Zuculini clear for the winner.

Verona continue in the tournament and get to visit Bologna.

Salernitana held Pisa to a 1-1 draw, but after extra time they could only be separated by a penalty shoot-out.

Pisa will take on Torino in the Fourth Round in November.
