Scouts were sent to observe Manolas during Tuesday evening's Champions League play-off against Porto, although the 3-0 defeat could not have made for an impressive show.

The 25-year-old has been in a tough renegotiation process with the Lupi this summer, as his agent insisted they wanted a raise or would refuse to renew their deal.

Some sources believe that Manolas' contract will be raised from €1.8m to €3m for only the one season, after which he will be sold to Barcelona. A deal is believed to be already in place for the sale, connected to this year's loan of Thomas Vermaelen.

Roma have worked very hard to keep the defender and Arsenal will have a tough time taking him away, even if Coach Arsene Wenger specifically made him his top transfer target.
